Lanka Communication Services (Pvt) Ltd (LankaCom) is a subsidiary of Singapore Telecom International and is the pioneer in providing Data Communication and Internet Services in Sri Lanka, being granted the first ever communication operator license (license no 1) upon liberalization of the telecom sector in Sri Lanka.
The Company is a joint venture between Singapore Telecom International and the Capital Development and Investment Company - a subsidiary of the National Development Bank of Sri Lanka.
LICENSE
LankaCom commenced operation in 1991 as a Recognized Private Operator Agency (RPOA) with a license granted by the government of Sri Lanka, initially providing International Private Leased Circuits, X.25 services and International Fax services.
The Company over time expanded its operation to provide infrastructure based Wireless/Radio Frequency networks, VSAT, Internet and Enhanced Voice Services
The license granted to LankaCom by the government of Sri Lanka/Telecommunication Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka enables LankaCom to own and operate its own infrastructure. The company has been allocated Spectrum/Radio frequencies to provide the afore detailed services.

INFRASTRUCTURE
International Infrastructure
LankaCom currently has access to the SEA-ME-WE-III and SEA-ME-WE-IV submarine cables enabling worldwide connectivity via low latency Fiber Optic cables.
The company also operators several satellite earth stations which are currently used mainly to provide back up for critical applications and network resilience.
Domestic Infrastructure
LankaCom operates a back bone network with a number of nodes located at strategic locations interconnected with high speed trunk lines configured to ensure high network availability. Point to point and point to multipoint wireless/RF networks are implemented using this core network to provide services to customers island-wide.
In the Greater Colombo area, LankaCom operates multiple networks to provide IP Services as well as Clear channel services.
A LMDS network has been implemented primarily to serve customer requiring low latency, high quality local tail circuits for IPLC and frame relay services. LMDS links are also used for provision of high capacity IP services.
An OFDM technology based network is used to provide broadband wireless connectivity for corporate Internet customers.
The Wireless IP Network (WIN) deployed by LankaCom to provide IP based connectivity to customers uses IP/VPN technology with Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) and encryption to ensure adequate security for standard customer applications. For customer applications that require Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees and higher level of security, MPLS and IPSec technologies are deployed.
